Degree Requirements

Master in Mechanical Engineering:

6 classes (24 credits), 2 of which are core classes (8 credits) (*) (**)

Foreign Language Proficiency Exam (must be taken in the first semester);

Master’s Seminar (must be held before the end of the second semester);

Masters dissertation;

Paper accepted for publication in an indexed journal or in conference proceedings organized by an entity of national or international scope.

Doctor of Mechanical Engineering:

12 classes (48 credits), 3 of which are core classes (12 credits). Classes taken in the master’s degree may be included (*) (**);

Foreign Language Proficiency Exam (must be taken in the first semester);

Qualifying Exam (must be defended before the end of the fourth semester);

Doctoral thesis;

Paper accepted for publication in a journal included in the Web of Science database, with a JCR impact factor equal to or greater than 1.0 (one).

The published paper must be related to the student’s thesis and can only be considered for a single doctoral thesis, i.e. it cannot be used by another student;

Affiliation to the PGMEC must be included in the published paper.

(*) Only one third of the courses taken may be special topics.

(**)In order to transfer class credits taken in other programs during the master’s or doctoral course, the class must be taught:

i) in a graduate program with a CAPES grade equal or higher than PGMEC’s grade, or

ii) by a professor that satisfies the requirements to be a full member of PGMEC.
